About Artist:

Lajos Tscheligi was born in 1913 in Budapest, Hungary. He is a descendant from a family of musicians and sculptors. His father, a church painter and restorer, gave him the first painting lessons. The formal training in art was completed at the Academy of Art in Budapest. Already there he excelled as a student. Lajos Tscheligi began his career working in the traditional religious style, following with a series of portraits, street scenes, and country scenery, ever searching for a new expression. His career was halted by World War II and after the Hungarian uprising he made his residence in Switzerland, where he achieved remarkable success. In peaceful Switzerland his art found a new expression which is best described as “Philosophical Abstract” and which won him honor in the XIV Grand Prix International in Paris, the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, Medaille d’Or du “Devouement Social” and Medaille d’Or du “Baron Taylor”. Lajos painted a composition of Mozart; he transformed the music into colors and then visualized himself as the piano player. In more recent years an increasing “Metaphysical Abstraction” started to take place in Lajos` work. “Making the invisible visible, my paintings are like hieroglyphs, bringing to the surface what seems hidden and what you first think as incomprehensible”. The internationally renowned Lajos Tscheligi spent his life in Hungary, Switzerland, Brazil and the USA. He participated in more than 40 solo exhibitions all over the world. His work is included in hundreds of private collections in Europe, North and South America and Asia. On the 13th of June 2003 Lajos Tscheligi died aged ninety years old. In the same year, posthumously, he has got the Commemorative plate “Pro Cultura Hungarica” for the significant contribution to the national cultural heritage given by The Ministry of National Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Hungary. more about: www.lajostscheligi.com
